Can We Read an Ecosystem Through Its Aroma?

 Plants continuously release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that change with species, growth stage, flowering, nutrition, water availability, heat, pest pressure and other environmental conditions.

At EcoPlanetFarm, Aroma Intelligence System (AIS) is an emerging research framework exploring whether these changing aroma and VOC signatures can provide an additional layer of ecological and agricultural intelligence.

AIS brings together field observation, olfaction science, plant VOCs, sensing technologies and AI/ML to investigate whether changes in plant and ecosystem aroma can help us understand stress, crop quality, biodiversity and environmental change.

AIS is currently a research framework under development and requires scientific validation.

What is Aroma Intelligence System (AIS)?

Reading Biological Signals from Plants and Ecosystems

 Aroma Intelligence System (AIS) is a research concept exploring how aroma and volatile organic compound (VOC) signatures can be interpreted as biological and environmental information.

Plants continuously release complex mixtures of volatile compounds. These emissions can change with species, flowering and fruiting stages, nutrition, water availability, temperature, microbial interactions, herbivory, disease and other environmental stresses.


Precision agriculture commonly relies on soil measurements, weather data and visual or spectral imaging. AIS explores aroma and VOC signatures as a fourth layer of observation, potentially adding information that conventional measurements may not capture.


At EcoPlanetFarm, AIS begins with long-term field observation of plants, natural aromas and ecological change. The research direction is to progressively connect these observations with VOC sensing, GC-MS analysis, electronic-nose technologies, environmental sensors and AI/ML.


The central research question is:

Can changes in the chemical signals emitted by plants and ecosystems help us detect stress, ecological change or crop-quality characteristics before they become visually apparent?
