Advancing field observation into measurable ecological intelligence

EcoPlanetFarm is a regenerative farm and living ecological observatory in the Western Ghats landscape of Maharashtra, India. More than a decade of living closely with this landscape has created an opportunity for continuous observation of relationships among plants, soil, biodiversity, climate, natural aromas and human wellbeing.

Our approach brings together field observation, food science, olfaction science, regenerative agriculture and emerging sensing technologies to explore signals in nature that are often present before they become visually apparent or conventionally measurable.

We invite universities, researchers, technology developers, startups, institutions and industry partners to collaborate on scientific questions involving plant volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aroma, soil and plant health, biodiversity, climate stress, food quality and ecological intelligence.


Aroma Intelligence Systems (AIS)

A particular area of interest is the development and validation of the Aroma Intelligence System (AIS) — a research framework exploring whether VOC and aroma signatures can provide an additional layer of information alongside soil, weather, imaging and other precision-monitoring data.

Plants, soil microorganisms, flowers, fruits, insects and other biological systems continuously produce volatile compounds. Their patterns may change with growth stage, environmental conditions, biological interactions, stress, disease, ripening and other ecological processes.

AIS seeks to investigate whether these chemical and sensory signals can be systematically observed, measured, digitised and interpreted using field observations, electronic noses, VOC sensors, GC-MS and other analytical techniques combined with AI/ML and environmental data.

The objective is not simply to detect smell, but to explore whether nature's volatile signals can become useful ecological intelligence.

Field testing and validation of e-noses, VOC sensors and scent-sensing technologies under changing environmental conditions.


AI/ML & Ecological Intelligence

Exploring how VOC information can be combined with weather, soil, biodiversity, imaging and other datasets for predictive modelling and ecological diagnostics.


Soil Olfaction & Biological Soil Health

Investigating relationships among soil aroma, microbial activity, organic matter, compost maturity, moisture and biological soil health.


Climate Stress & Plant Communication

Observing whether changing VOC signatures can provide early indications of heat, water, pest, disease or other environmental stresses.


Food Quality & Sensory Intelligence

Exploring aroma signatures associated with maturity, harvest timing, freshness, storage, deterioration, authenticity and sensory quality.


Biodiversity & Natural Aroma Landscapes

Understanding how vegetation diversity, flowering cycles, insects, microorganisms, weather and seasonal changes influence the volatile environment of a landscape.


Sustainable Lifestyle & Human Wellbeing

Observing the relationship between biodiverse, aroma-rich natural landscapes and human experience, while developing research questions that can be scientifically tested rather than assuming health effects.


From Observation to Validation

EcoPlanetFarm is not positioned as a conventional laboratory or as a source of predetermined scientific conclusions.

It is a living field observatory where questions can originate from long-term observation and then be subjected to scientific measurement and validation.

This distinction is important. An unusual aroma, change in flowering behaviour, insect activity, soil smell, fruit aroma, climatic event or plant response may begin as an observation. Collaboration with appropriate scientific institutions can then help determine what is measurable, reproducible and scientifically meaningful.

If successful, this approach could contribute to a deeper understanding of how plants and ecosystems communicate their changing condition.
